Maine Senate Candidate Embraces Progressive Themes at Rally

On Monday, Graham Platner, a Senate candidate from Maine, joined forces with Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to promote a number of progressive messages. He took aim at the five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins, criticizing U.S. arms spending, especially in relation to the conflicts in Gaza and Iran.

Platner, who is a prominent Democratic contender aiming to dethrone Collins in the upcoming November elections, expressed his views with passion at the “War on the Oligarchy” rally held in Portland. This event served to unite progressive activists and bolster grassroots efforts ahead of the midterm elections. It was one of several appearances Sanders made in Maine alongside Platner and gubernatorial hopeful Troy Jackson.

During his speech, Platner adopted strong anti-corporate sentiments, urging the enthusiastic crowd to embark on a “political revolution” and reclaim what belongs to the people.

“We’re going to take back what’s ours. We will reclaim it from billionaires driven by greed and politicians who have betrayed us, like Susan Collins, and from profit-obsessed corporations,” Platner asserted.

He echoed Sanders’ economic critiques throughout the evening, targeting health insurance executives whom he accused of profiting from the struggles of ordinary citizens.

Taking a more pointed stance on foreign policy, Platner expressed concern that U.S. tax dollars were utilized in ways that harm vulnerable populations. “With our tax dollars, we can build schools and hospitals in America instead of dropping bombs on Gaza or Iran,” he stated.

Following Platner’s speech, Sanders took the stage, emphasizing the importance of Platner’s candidacy as a pivotal moment for the progressive movement. “You elected Graham Platner to be your senator. You’re going to change America,” he declared to the crowd.

Sanders further associated Platner with his proposal for a tax on the ultra-wealthy, mentioning a bill he introduced aimed at implementing a 5% annual wealth tax on the country’s billionaires. “I think Mr. Graham will be on my side to do that,” Sanders remarked.

Platner was also described as a supporter in the battle against tech giants like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Sanders cautioned that without collective action, “a handful of billionaires” could dictate the future of technology and artificial intelligence in the country.

“Mr. Graham understands… we won’t allow a select few billionaires to control our nation’s future,” Sanders said.
