The rules of the Main Principal Association stated that future student-athletes must “declare gender identity to member schools if their gender identity is different from the gender of the student assigned at the time of the student's birth.” The rules stated that schools have “the sole authority to determine gender identity assignments intended to register athletic ability and participate in events sponsored by the MPA.”
Furthermore, “We do not require medical records or official documents necessary to establish a student's gender identity.”
“That's the policy Gov. Mills is defending President Trump,” Libby said. “It's very extreme. It's an outlier among other states that have similar policies, and that's an extreme position that Mainers doesn't support.
“Not only does she support this extreme policy, but her stance could cost Maine schools $250 million, which would provide education to Maine children. It's the money needed to do that. She seems to be digging quite deep, and President Trump has to take this all the way through the courthouse.”
