Trump Calls for Changes to Hyde Amendment
President Donald Trump is urging Congress to reconsider a significant Republican measure that restricts taxpayer dollars from funding abortions. He suggested that Republicans might need to adopt a more lenient attitude towards the Hyde Amendment if they aim to make healthcare a key issue for their party.
The Hyde Amendment currently bars federal funds from being used for abortion services, although it does allow for exceptions in cases of rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is at risk. Trump emphasized, “We need to be a bit flexible with Hyde. We recognize this, right? We should be creative, and we have to work on this.”
Trump’s remarks quickly sparked criticism from influential pro-life organizations and Republican figures who maintain that the Hyde Amendment should remain intact and non-negotiable.
Senators James Lankford from Oklahoma and Roger Marshall from Kansas were particularly vocal against any attempts to dilute or discard the amendment. Lankford remarked, “I firmly believe in the value of every child’s life,” while Marshall stated, “I completely understand the president’s viewpoint, but I stand by my pro-life stance.”
Pro-life advocates, including those from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, have described the Hyde Amendment as a foundational principle for the Republican Party. Marjorie Dannenfelser, the organization’s president, asserted that voters expect the Republican leadership to uphold their promises, warning that caving to Democrats’ demands regarding abortion funding would be a severe betrayal of their constituents.
Historically, Trump has supported the Hyde Amendment, previously vowing to make it a permanent legislative priority. Last year, one of his first actions in office involved taking steps to reverse alleged violations of the Hyde Act by President Biden.
