There’s not a very clear consensus on who should succeed the 81-year-old Biden. Only 29% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters chose Vice President Kamala Harris as their top choice to replace Biden. But the survey also found that seven in 10 Democrats would be happy with Harris becoming the Democratic presidential nominee. But a majority of Americans overall, 53%, are not.
Only 7% of Democrats and Democratic leaners chose California Governor Gavin Newsom as their top candidate.
While a majority of respondents (58%) believe both Biden and former President Donald Trump are “too old” to serve again as president, more than a quarter (28%) said only Biden is too old, while only 2% said the same about only Trump.
Still, Americans are more confident in Trump’s health and overall well-being than Biden.
According to the study:
Biden faces more scrutiny than Trump regarding his health and well-being. For example, 44% of people say the statement “He has the mental clarity necessary to serve effectively as president” applies to Trump, compared with 14% who say it applies to Biden. Two in five (41%) say the statement applies to neither man. A similar pattern emerges when it comes to questions about physical health (44% say it applies to Trump, 13% say it applies to Biden, and 43% say it’s neutral). Notably, Biden has regressed on these two attributes since late April, while perceptions of Trump’s mental and physical health have remained constant.
The poll, conducted July 5-9, 2024 among 2,431 adults, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points and comes as Biden continues to fend off calls to drop out of the presidential race. He has remained defiant, making clear in letters to Democratic lawmakers that he has no intention of ignoring the will of the voters by dropping out of the race.
This morning, I sent a letter to my Democratic colleagues in Congress in which I shared my thoughts about this moment in the campaign.

Biden’s defiance came shortly after the White House publicly acknowledged that Biden was among those attending a White House meeting in January, including Dr. Kevin Canard, a neurologist specializing in Parkinson’s disease at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Biden is scheduled to sit down for a one-on-one interview with NBC’s Lester Holt, coming just after the network said he “definitely” has Parkinson’s disease.
