A new poll released Tuesday shows a majority of New Yorkers support President-elect Donald Trump's plan to deport millions of illegal immigrants, including nearly half of Latino immigrants. It became clear.
About 54% of respondents statewide said New York should support Trump's deportation effort, while fewer said the Empire State should oppose it, according to a Siena College poll. It was only 35%.
A total of 38% of Democrats, 87% of Republicans, and 54% of independents support the mass deportation plan that President Trump made a central pillar of his campaign.
Men were more likely than women to agree, with 61% of male respondents and 49% of female respondents agreeing, while 31% and 38%, respectively, disagreed.
The poll also found that 56% of whites, 51% of blacks and 47% of Latinos support the bill, with majority support among residents living in cities, suburbs and upstate states. Shown.
Perhaps most surprising is that nearly 30% of self-described liberals supported the plan. This is a surprising show of support for one of President Trump's most controversial plans.
The survey was conducted from Dec. 2 to Dec. 5, surveyed 834 registered voters, and has a margin of error of about 4 percentage points.
The numbers likely reflect the heavy toll the immigration crisis has taken on the Big Apple, including a roughly $6.1 billion budget hit, according to city data.
And although the influx of migrants has only slowed in recent months, with the city closing 11 emergency shelters in the past six weeks, more than 56,000 migrants remained in the shelter system as of late November. .
Mayor Eric Adams has also taken a tougher stance on immigration, saying he wants to deport New York City immigrants accused of crimes before they go to court.
“My position is those who committed crimes in our city. You have given up your right to live in our city. I am prepared to find the best way to deal with it,” he said last week. “There is,” he said.
“People who come here and commit crimes, shoot at police officers, rob, and rape innocent people have harmed our country.”
Since spring 2022, more than 224,400 immigrants have come through the city's intake system.
