Majority of Swing State Voters Say Biden Should End Campaign

A recent post-debate poll by Morning Consult found that a majority of voters in battleground states believe President Joe Biden should end his campaign.

The survey looked at voter sentiment in key battleground states including Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin following Biden’s poor performance in the Atlanta debate.

Overall, 55% of voters in these battleground states said Biden should not continue campaigning for president, compared with 39% who said he should.

What’s more, one in three Democrats (29%) and eight in 10 Republicans share the same view, and a majority of independents (58%) also believe Biden should stop campaigning for president.

Meanwhile, half of voters in these key battleground states say former President Donald Trump should continue to campaign for president, compared with 45% who say he shouldn’t. Trump has far more support from his base than from Democrats, with 89% of Republicans saying he should continue to campaign. 66% of Democrats said the same about Biden.

Eight percent of independents were unsure whether Trump should stop campaigning, but just under half, 48 percent, said he should, while 44 percent said he shouldn’t.

The survey was conducted among more than 4,000 voters in key battleground states from July 1 to July 5, 2024. The margin of error is plus or minus 5 percentage points.
