Majority of Voters Favor Trump’s Plan for Higher Tariffs

A majority of registered voters say they are likely to support a presidential candidate who supports former President Donald Trump's proposed U.S. tariffs on all foreign imports, according to a new poll.

Reuters/Ipsos vote Fifty-six percent of voters are more likely to support a candidate who supports imposing a 10% tariff on all imports and a 60% tariff on imports from China. Only 41% of voters say they are less likely to support a candidate who proposes higher tariffs.

While the majority of swing voters supported a pro-tariff candidate, one in three Democrats said they were more likely to support a candidate who supported higher tariffs.

Such a tariff plan was proposed by President Trump, but Vice President Kamala Harris attacked it, incorrectly calling it a “national sales tax.”

Speaking at the Democratic National Convention, Harris attacked Trump's tariff plans, citing arguments from liberal free trade groups and suggesting that higher tariffs would increase inflation.

Chinese business executives have made similar claims to Harris about President Trump's tariff plans.

Last week, Hao Hong, a Chinese economist at the GROW Investment Group, Claimed President Trump's tariff proposal is a “win-win” for both the United States and China.

“China's export sector is very competitive, which is helping to keep global inflation down. For example, if we put a 100 percent tariff on Chinese exports, you can imagine how high inflation would be in the United States,” Hong said.

However, the study repetition It has been shown that current inflation has little to do with recent increases in US import tariffs.

“The timing of the tariffs is clearly uncorrelated with inflation, and removing the tariffs would likely not have curbed inflation,” the Economic Policy Institute researchers wrote. “Although the majority of the tariffs were in place before 2020, inflation only began to accelerate in March 2021. Clearly, inflation was driven by many factors other than the tariffs.”
