Male, 30, shoots 14 rounds at teens playing ‘ding-dong-ditch’ prank — and wounds 1, police say

Maine State Police say a 30-year-old man fired 14 rounds from a handgun at teenagers playing a “ding-dong-ditch” prank over the weekend, wounding one of them.

Police responded to Harrison around 1 a.m. Saturday after receiving multiple reports of gunshots and screaming. WMTW-TV reported..

“This innocent prank should be put away on a shelf somewhere, never to be seen again.”

A police investigation revealed that after young people rang the doorbell at 91 Waterford Road, suspect Vincent Martin pulled out a 9mm handgun and fired 14 shots at the young people, police said.

Police said when officers arrived on scene and found blood on the road, one of the victims, whose name authorities have not released, suffered a gunshot wound to the right calf and was taken to Bridgeton Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, WMTW reported.

Martin was arrested on multiple charges, including aggravated assault and reckless conduct, the station said. Martin is being held on $5,000 bail, WMTW reported, adding that a judge ordered Martin not to have any contact with teenagers or use or purchase firearms or ammunition. Martin was not listed on the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office website Wednesday.

“In my opinion, those kids should not have done that, but we also have a problem with someone having a gun and firing at those kids who were running away,” Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce told WMTV.

Joyce added to the station: “People are interpreting the fact that they can protect their homes, their families and so on, and maybe in this case they’ve gone a little over the edge. We live in a world where everyone seems to be on edge.”

But the sheriff doesn’t seem to like “Ding Dong Ditch,” adding: “This innocent prank needs to be put away on a shelf somewhere and never be played out again.”
