Males — ages 11, 13, and 15 — took video of themselves in car purposely hitting 63-year-old bike rider who was killed: Cops

Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico said three men (ages 11, 13 and 15) intentionally attacked three men (a 63-year-old bicycle rider who was killed) while riding in the car last year. The victim was on his way to work.

Police said Scott Dwight Harbormel was riding a bike to work at Sandia National Laboratory when he was attacked by a car.

The man recorded a video of the victim attacking, police added that the driver of the car, apparently 13, shook from the southbound lane of Moon Street towards the dedicated bike lane and hit Harbor Mail.

Police say the man in the car saw the flashing light on the bike, and the sound from the recorded video indicates he is planning to hit the bike.

The video captured a conversation between the men, police said, adding that the driver said he was hitting a bike rider, and that the vehicle appears to be accelerating. A passenger in the back seat, who police said he looked like 15, said the bike rider wasn't too fast. Police said the driver responded, “Do you want to smash him?” The passenger in the back seat said, “Yeah, just hit him. 15… 20.”

Police said the passenger seat was believed to be 11 years old – but waving a handgun and leapt in and laughed as the car hit Harbormel. Police said the impact caused a loud noise, including metal bending, and sent Harbormel and his bike onto the vehicle.

Details from the police:

APD's fatal crash team investigated the fatal crash, but did not determine who was in the car that hit Harbormel. Crime Stoppers Bulletin has released video images of the car from a nearby church.

In February, APD received an anonymous hint that a crash mobile phone video was posted to social media. The tips included the Instagram account and the identity of its users. The incident was handed over to the murder squad on February 25th.

The middle school principal reported to police at a public school in Albuquerque that the student reported the same video of the crash as detectives were working on an Instagram account that had been flagged in another investigation.

Detectives secured a warrant for social media accounts and search for previously seized mobile phones from people aged 11 and 13 during another investigation in June 2024, police said.

The police department's digital intelligence team has identified several video clips showing all three suspects, including original video of the crash, police said.

The detective said he arrested Monday at the age of 13 on the basis of several charges including the number of murders unlocked, the murder conspiracy, the scene of an accident involving major bodily harm and death, and the illegal possession of a handgun by a person.

The murder detective also charged a 15-year-old with the same crime, police added that 11-year-old is too young to be charged with murder. Police said detectives are working with the District Attorney's Office and the New Mexico Department of Children, Youth and Families to determine the charges he may face and whether he can be detained by those charges.

Police said the 13-year-old boy will be booked at a juvenile detention centre. Krqe said the 11-year-old has been handed over to Cyfd, the state.

Krqe said he had no date of birth to 11, so it's not yet clear whether he was 10 or 11 in May 2024.

Police said they were “in contact” with an 11-year-old last year, saying KRQE covers at least one case.
