Tillman’s Impressive Role in U.S. Team Victory

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The midfield was a standout element in what might be one of the finest U.S. national team performances in World Cup history.

Four years ago, the squad leaned heavily on its MMA trio of Yunus Musa, Weston McKennie, and Tyler Adams. This time, however, Malik Tillman stepped in for Musa, contributing to a new—and arguably superior—dynamic.

“He’s a fantastic player,” Folarin Balogun remarked about Tillman. “You could see it [on Friday]. He was relentless in his attacking, though he was perhaps a bit unlucky not to score. But really, Malik is essential for us in this tournament.”

The U.S. kicked off their Group D campaign with a strong 4-1 win against Paraguay. Balogun netted two goals, and while Christian Pulisic showcased impressive skills, Tillman truly shone, possibly delivering his best performance on the international stage.

“It felt amazing. Starting strong is crucial for us, and I think we really played well as a team, especially in that first half,” Tillman expressed. “It was a proud moment for me.”

He added, somewhat nostalgically, “I think it was the first time my mom saw me play for the national team live. It made the moment incredibly special. I met up with her after the game, and it felt really great, especially seeing how proud she was.”

Tillman’s display highlighted both his technical skills and tactical flexibility.

“Malik is creative,” McKennie noted. “I might be creative too and work hard, but Tyler’s tenacity covers ground like no other.”

Coach Mauricio Pochettino has assigned Tillman a more defensive role than he had during the previous year when he played as a number 10 at PSV Eindhoven. Now, he’s embracing a position akin to his time as a No. 8 at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

In the second match against the United States, McKennie played a deeper role alongside Adams, often shifting forward to support Balogun and Pulisic on the flanks.

Paraguay’s coach, Gustavo Alfaro, commended the U.S. attack for its intricacy, remarking, “They create a pentagon in midfield. They have a solution for every challenge.”

This complexity was underscored when Pulisic had to exit unexpectedly at half-time following an injury. Tillman was quickly called back to bolster the offensive front.

“In the past couple of days, I had numerous discussions with the coach,” Tillman said. “Ultimately, I feel like the main change for me is just adjusting my defensive placement.”

“When I’m on the ball, the coach trusts me to be dynamic and find opportunities to score, while also contributing to our build-up. I’ve talked to him quite a bit, and he sees this role as the best way for me to add value to the team.”
