Zoran Mamdani Addresses Middle East Peace Deal and Trump
In a recent interview, NYC mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani cautiously approached the topic of President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace efforts. When asked about his potential presidency, Mamdani expressed, “I’m grateful and I have hope.” He added that the situation seems manageable and hopes it will continue.
However, when questioned about giving Trump credit for the first phase of the Gaza peace deal, Mamdani hesitated, stating it’s “too early” for that kind of acknowledgment.
The self-identified “democratic socialist” has begun addressing Trump directly. He remarked, “I’m not going to be a mayor like Adams, looking for a way to evade accountability. I can handle this on my own.” He emphasized his commitment to being a mayor who would advocate for lowering living costs.
These comments come amid ongoing tensions between him and Trump. The president has threatened to cut federal funds and deploy the National Guard if Mamdani wins the mayoral race. Polls, as per a recent Quinnipiac University survey just weeks ahead of the election, show Mamdani leading independent candidate Andrew Cuomo by a significant margin.
On Tuesday, Trump reiterated his warnings, expressing dissatisfaction with the prospect of Mamdani’s administration. “We won’t let any mayor destroy our cities,” he stated, linking it to broader issues facing several urban areas, including New York and Chicago.
Mamdani also addressed the recent release of hostages by Hamas without specifically referencing Trump. He noted a “glimmer of hope” for a ceasefire and mentioned the ongoing pain felt by many New Yorkers. He criticized governmental actions that have led to suffering, emphasizing the need for accountability.
During a rally, Mamdani declared the significance of the progressive movement within the Democratic Party, asserting that they are winning the “battle for the soul” of the party.
He is set to debate his opponents this Thursday, just ahead of the November 4 election.
