New Poll Shows Mamdani Leading in NYC Mayoral Race
Zohran Mamdani, a socialist candidate for mayor of New York City, currently leads former governor Curtis Sliwa and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams in a recent survey.
A poll conducted by Wick, shared on Mark Halperin’s podcast Next with Mark Halperin, indicates that Mamdani has garnered 39% of the vote, while Sliwa trails at 18% and Adams is at 9%. Notably, Andrew Cuomo, another contender, has 21% support in this four-way race.
When looking at a two-candidate scenario between Mamdani and Cuomo, the race is particularly close, with Cuomo at 42% and Mamdani slightly behind at 41%. Voter breakdown shows that Mamdani is favored by 55% of Democrats, 27% of independents, and 10% of Republicans.
In a matchup with Adams, Mamdani holds a stronger position with 47% support compared to Adams’ 37%. Here, Mamdani enjoys support from 66% of Democratic voters, alongside 28% from independents and 9% from Republicans. In contrast, Adams only secures 21% of Democrats, but finds stronger backing from independents (63%) and Republicans (65%).
Cuomo, who stepped down as governor in 2021 amidst sexual harassment claims, has launched an independent bid for the NYC mayoralty, expressing his determination to win.
Adams, elected as a Democratic mayor in 2021, has stated that he will exit his position as mayor to seek reelection as an independent.
Mamdani, who recently won the Democratic primary, has proposed the establishment of city-operated grocery stores, suggesting that funds typically allocated to corporate supermarkets would instead support these city-owned ventures. He faced backlash over previous comments made during a podcast in July 2020. In a discussion about domestic violence responses, he noted that police shouldn’t be the primary solution, stating, “the police don’t create safety.”
“Police are not creating safety… we give so much responsibility to them that might be better managed by others trained in specific situations,” Mamdani argued, addressing the complexities of various scenarios.
Recently, the New York Young Republican Club (NYYRC) has called for Congress to invoke a rebellion clause aimed at disqualifying Mamdani from the mayoral race. They accuse him of providing “support to the enemy” and linking him to a pro-Hamas organization during protests.
