Zohran Mamdani’s Campaign Faces Criticism Over “Savings Calculator”

Zohran Mamdani, a leading candidate for mayor, has introduced a “savings calculator” aimed at demonstrating potential financial relief for New Yorkers under his administration. However, opponents are quick to label the calculations as unrealistic.

The calculator highlights key aspects of his affordability plan, which includes suggestions like freezing rents for stabilized units, implementing free bus fares, and providing universal child care.

Critiquing the initiative, GOP candidate Curtis Swah stated, “It’s like magic—promised savings that don’t actually exist. New Yorkers deserve genuine proposals, not gimmicky tricks.”

Interestingly, the average rent calculations did not take into account the period of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s leadership, during which rent was relatively low.

As for bus fares, they were based on the expected $3 charge next year, projected alongside anticipated commuter trips. Child care “savings” arise from a formula that calculates costs by multiplying the number of children under five by what the campaign claims is the average expense of child care, around $22,000.

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo also criticized these figures, suggesting that many New Yorkers, including renters, wouldn’t benefit as much as Mamdani suggests.

“If you opt for the subway instead of the bus, your savings are nonexistent. And if you have more than five kids, good luck. That’s the crux of our concern,” he added.

Mamdani is under continuous scrutiny regarding how he intends to finance his various proposals, many of which appear beyond the scope of a mayor’s responsibilities.

While in an ideal setting, one could imagine all of Mamdani’s ideas becoming reality with a simple signature, most would actually require input and approval from various government levels.

For instance, bus fares are determined by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, a state agency, although the mayor does have the power to select its board members.

Expanding universal child care significantly would likely entail higher taxes for the wealthiest citizens and businesses, necessitating the backing of state legislators and Governor Kathy Hochul.

Finally, decisions on rent adjustments affecting around one million units will be made by the Rent Guidelines Committee, which Mamdani can influence through his appointments.
