Mamdani looks for support from Jeffries and Schumer in the competitive NYC mayoral race

Mamdani Pushes for Support in NYC Mayoral Race

Controversial Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is actively seeking crucial backing as New York City’s election approaches in November.

This Friday, Mamdani is slated to meet with Brooklyn’s House Leader, Hakeem Jeffries, to discuss important issues. However, Jeffries has remained tight-lipped about whether he will endorse Mamdani.

“I’m planning to have a candid conversation and see where it leads, much like my previous decisions,” Jeffries noted to reporters.

Mamdani Faces Mixed Reactions

There are also expectations for Mamdani to connect with Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer. Yet, no specific dates are confirmed for this meeting. Speculation is rife about how their differing views on Israel might affect party dynamics. Schumer, a long-time supporter of Israel, has openly criticized the BDS movement, while Mamdani, who has been vocal against Israel, has stood in favor of BDS.

Mamdani has encountered backlash regarding his statements on Israel, including hesitating to affirm Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. Recently, he has tried to distance himself from prior controversial phrases.

During a recent meeting with business leaders, he claimed he hadn’t used certain divisive slogans and encouraged others to refrain from doing so, indicating he plans to clarify his stance soon.

Support and Criticism from Party Leaders

While Mamdani still awaits Schumer’s endorsement, the Senate leader has defended him against GOP critics. When former President Trump threatened to arrest Mamdani if he became mayor and refused to cooperate with ICE, Schumer labeled the threat as “pathetic absurd.” He expressed concern that such tactics undermine democratic values.

Mamdani has support from Rep. Jerry Nadler, another significant figure in New York’s Jewish Democratic community, despite the mixed reactions.

Network Building and Campaign Dynamics

Mamdani’s meeting with Jeffries follows a recent trip to Washington, D.C., where he attended a breakfast with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This event connected him with influential party members, and he has since garnered Ocasio-Cortez’s approval. Other prominent figures, like Representative Ro Khanna, have remarked on Mamdani’s charismatic nature.

As the race unfolds, Mamdani finds himself in a competitive landscape, facing notable figures like Governor Andrew Cuomo and the current mayor, Eric Adams.
