Political Controversy Surrounding Mamdani’s Statement
Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has sparked contention with remarks regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions, calling them a “genocidal war.” His comments coincided with the anniversary of Hamas’s attack on Israel, which occurred on October 7, 2023.
Mamdani, who identifies as a socialist, initially condemned the “horrible war crimes” perpetrated by Hamas in a statement shared on X. After criticizing the Israeli government, he asserted that the U.S. government is complicit in this situation. He reflected on the losses from two years ago, stating, “Hamas committed a horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more.” He expressed sorrow for those casualties and the ongoing plight of the hostages and their families.
He further claimed that following that day, the Israeli government, under Netanyahu, initiated a war that has led to a staggering death toll now exceeding 67,000. Mamdani stated, “Each day in Gaza feels devoid of language for grief. I mourn these lives and pray for the shattered families. Our government is complicit through it all.”
Mamdani emphasized the need for an end to “occupation and apartheid” and insisted on seeking peace through diplomacy rather than through war crimes. He urged the U.S. government to hold accountable those responsible for the ongoing violence.
“These past two years have displayed the worst of humanity,” Mamdani remarked. “We must respond by embodying our best: the relentless pursuit of higher ideals and a commitment to universal human rights.”
His campaign did not reply to requests for comments regarding these statements.
In response, Fabian Levy, deputy mayor for communications under current Mayor Eric Adams, criticized Mamdani’s comments, suggesting they reflect a denial of Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and show more criticism for the U.S. government than for Hamas.
Additionally, New York Republican Representative Elise Stefanik termed Mamdani’s remarks “atrocious” in her own social media post.
Mamdani has faced ongoing criticism for his perceived anti-Israel stances, particularly in connection with a previously controversial statement regarding the “globalization of the intifada,” which many interpreted as inciting violence against Jews.
