Mamdani replies to Trump’s criticism: 'I urge him to understand my real policies'

Zoran Mamdani expressed his frustration regarding the recent Democratic mayoral primary in New York City, specifically addressing President Trump’s assertion that certain state senators are “communist madmen.”

“This isn’t the first time President Trump has commented on himself. I, as well as many New Yorkers, encourage everyone to understand my real policies aimed at making cities more affordable,” he told ABC News’ Rachel Scott during an interview on Wednesday.

Trump’s remarks followed Mamdani’s unexpected surge in the primary race, where he surpassed former government official Andrew Cuomo. Notably, no candidate achieved a majority in the initial voting.

Cuomo’s early support, which had shown promise in polls, was later overshadowed by self-identified democratic socialists, especially following confusion over the city’s ranked voting system.

As Mamdani looks likely to secure the Democratic nomination, Trump, along with other Republicans, has voiced his disapproval.

“It has finally happened: the Democrats have crossed a line. Zoran Mamdani, a complete communist madman, has just won the DEM primary and is on his way to becoming mayor,” Trump, a longtime resident of New York, stated on Truth Social.

“We’ve seen radical leftists before, but this is just absurd,” he added.

Mamdani’s campaign is largely focused on addressing the city’s affordable housing crisis, with ambitious proposals such as freezing rents, expediting bus services, and establishing city-operated grocery stores.

During his interview with ABC, he criticized Trump for heavily campaigning on economic issues as he prepares for the 2024 election, yet not prioritizing these matters since resuming office this year.

“He ran a campaign discussing the need for lower grocery costs and more manageable living expenses for many people,” Mamdani shared with Scott. “But it appears he’s not really invested in making that a reality.”

“If he’s open to changing his stance, I’m willing to collaborate with him,” he expressed hopefully.

Mamdani has also committed to opposing Trump’s administration, particularly due to its stance on illegal immigration.

“However, if he persists in targeting his political opponents and seeks to undermine New Yorkers based on documentation, sexual orientation, or political beliefs, then that’s a fight I’m ready to face,” the state lawmaker remarked.

Cuomo remains a challenging contender as he aims to close the gap with New York City Mayor Eric Adams in the November general election and has decided to run as an independent. Curtis Silwa, the Republican candidate and founder of the Guardian Angels, is also in the race.
