On Saturday, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani shared a video detailing his initiative to establish government-operated grocery stores inspired by Soviet models. He argues this could lead to a “new era” of affordable shopping accessible to all.
“New York City, it’s time for a grand experiment,” states the narrator, identified as Socialist Paul. The video was made available through the Mayor’s Office and various social media channels.
He draws a comparison to ex-Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, suggesting that just as LaGuardia employed government intervention during the Great Depression, today’s administration will tackle the current crisis of rising food prices and inaccessibility.
The video features a shopping cart gliding through a pristine supermarket, stocked with fresh produce, eggs, coffee, and other quality items, accompanied by a flashing message proclaiming: “Affordable groceries for everyone.”
In last year’s mayoral campaign, Mamdani committed to launching a public grocery store in each of the city’s five wards.
Earlier this month, he revealed that one of these locations will be situated at the city-owned La Marqueta market in East Harlem, with a projected cost of $30 million—four times higher than the expense for setting up a competing market.
Mamdani aims to have all five markets operational by 2029, expecting at least one to open next year. The city has already secured $70 million in capital funding for the project.
“The city will subsidize essential items. Private entities will manage the stores, adhering to city-established standards,” Mamdani noted.
“Basic items like bread and eggs will be less expensive, making grocery shopping manageable, and we will ensure fair treatment for workers.”
He stressed, “This embodies our vision of a new era. When grocery prices become prohibitive, the government will intervene to ensure affordability.”
The video, however, faced backlash from critics who view Mamdani’s proposal as a looming disaster.
“It’s a terrible scam on multiple levels,” fumed one individual.
Another added, “This presentation seems like something aimed at kids. No sensible person would believe we’re entering a ‘new era’ of affordable food. You can’t get something for nothing; food costs money to produce.”
Retired NYPD officer John Macari Jr., co-host of “New York’s Finest: The Unfiltered Podcast with Retirees,” questioned, “What price differences should New Yorkers expect to see from these stores?”
Ultimately, he expressed skepticism regarding the viability of affordability in these municipal grocery stores, remarking, “I’m not going to hold my breath for that answer.”
