Trump Comments on Platner’s Campaign Suspension
President Trump remarked on the challenges Congressional Democrats face following former Maine Senator Graham Platner’s decision to suspend his campaign on Wednesday.
“It’s tough for them. It’s a matter of believing women or not. There are a lot of false claims. He’s definitely cornered. But can they do anything? I think he’s going to lose,” Trump stated while speaking to reporters on Air Force One as he was returning to the U.S. from the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.
Platner announced the suspension of his campaign after significant withdrawals of support from many Democrats and liberals who had once backed him.
Pressure for his resignation intensified after Politico released a detailed report on sexual assault allegations against Platner.
According to the article, a former girlfriend of Platner, Jenny Racicot, accused him of breaking into her home and assaulting her in 2021.
The Politico report also referenced a New York Times article that discussed additional allegations of physical abuse against Platner, this time from Lindsay Fifield, a digital strategist involved in Republican campaigns.
Trump mentioned Fifield’s allegations, questioning why they didn’t receive the same level of attention as Racicot’s.
“It’s interesting how when a Republican woman makes the same claims, no one believes her… But when this woman spoke up, everyone believed her, right?” Trump posed to reporters.
Fifield responded critically to the New York Times’ portrayal of her allegations, pointing out its emphasis on her Republican background.
“I’m here alone, the only one being photographed, yet they give me 11 paragraphs about my job history. What is going on?” Fifield told FOX News Digital in an interview on Wednesday.
Platner has denied the allegations, asserting that his suspension should not be viewed as an admission of guilt.
Though he suspended his campaign, it wasn’t formally to allow for a successor. Maine law necessitates that he officially withdraw by July 13 for Democrats to nominate another candidate in his place.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Platner’s team for further comments.
