Mayor Zoran Mamdani Discusses Relationship with Trump

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani shared his views in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. He noted that while he and President Donald Trump both share a fondness for New York, their opinions diverge significantly on issues surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Amid various speculations regarding the mayor-elect, his amicable meeting with President Trump took many by surprise. In a notable exchange, Mamdani downplayed a reporter’s question about earlier comments labeling Trump as a fascist, stating he was unconcerned.

The interviewer recalled that a highlight of Mamdani’s first year as mayor was that White House meeting, remarking that it seemed beneficial for both parties.

Mamdani Describes Relations as Honest

The mayor characterized his relationship with Trump as “honest” and “direct.” He explained, “Our relationship centers on New York City.” Though they disagree on many subjects, he emphasized their shared love for the city. “Every time we talk or meet, it’s something I’m reminded of,” he said.

The conversation shifted to recent controversies involving large ICE raids across major cities. The interviewer probed whether Mamdani was trying to earn Trump’s favor to avert similar actions in New York. The mayor affirmed the need for sincerity with the president, saying, “It’s important to maintain integrity in our disagreements.” He mentioned informing Trump of his belief that ICE is a detrimental agency and that it should be abolished in favor of a more humane immigration system.

Reflecting on their discussions, Mamdani noted that they often spoke as New Yorkers, which brought a unique dynamic to their conversation. “We discussed community issues and zoning laws,” he recalled.
