New York Mayoral Race Update
Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate for mayor in New York City, asserted that President Trump’s financial backers wouldn’t dictate the election results shortly after incumbent Eric Adams concluded his re-election efforts.
“Sure, Trump and his wealthy supporters might influence what Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo do, but they won’t control the outcome of this election,” Mamdani stated during an appearance on MSNBC Sunday night. “This is still the same campaign we began on October 23rd, 2024.”
Adams, who had been running an independent campaign since April, pulled out of the race recently to consult with White House special envoy Steve Witkoff about potential roles within the administration.
On the Republican side, Curtis Sliwa, another mayoral candidate, disclosed last week that he had received a financial proposition from a wealthy New Yorker to withdraw from the race. However, it’s still unclear whether this individual was connected to Trump.
Cuomo, who previously served as New York’s governor and is running an independent campaign, has avoided engaging with Trump despite reports of a phone conversation. Mamdani, who has already outperformed Cuomo and various others to secure the Democratic nomination, criticized Trump for trying to simplify the race to just two contenders.
“Trump continuously expresses his desire to narrow this contest, using every tool he has to undermine our campaign for affordable options,” Mamdani told MSNBC. “Clearly, he’s trying to shape this race.”
“But we’re showing him that New Yorkers are fed up with his style of politics and tired of being driven out of the city.”
Mamdani’s remarks were echoed in a video shared soon after Adams withdrew from the race. In the clip, he criticized the mayor’s tenure and sent a message to Cuomo.
“To Andrew Cuomo: You got what you wanted. You wanted Trump and your wealthy allies to help clear the competition, but you ended up with me opposing you in the primary—and we’re ahead by 13 points.”
A recent poll from Suffolk University Cityview showed Mamdani with 45% support, while Cuomo, Sliwa, and Adams garnered 25%, 9%, and 8% of support, respectively.
