Mamdani Vows to Work Cooperatively with Police — Supporters Who Assisted Him Aim to Reduce Jail Populations

New York’s mayor-elect, Zoran Mamdani, who identifies with socialist values, has expressed a commitment to respect police officers. However, members of the “abolitionist” group that supported his campaign have referred to police as “pigs” and “lazy cowards.”

Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), will step into leadership of one of the largest police departments in the U.S. when he takes office on January 1. He has previously advocated for disbanding the NYPD during his tenure as a state legislator, aligning himself with DSA’s platform. Despite winning the election with considerable support from DSA staff and volunteers, he maintained that his approach to public safety was more moderate compared to the DSA’s typical stance.

As he prepares to take on his role, Mamdani will face various security challenges, including persistently high crime rates aggravated by the ongoing fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, and critical conditions at Rikers Island. Statistics reveal a troubling increase in major felonies, reaching a 17-year high in 2023, although there was a slight drop in 2024.

Should the DSA have its way, Mamdani could aim for a radical overhaul of the judicial system as we know it. Their website advocates for the dismantling of state mechanisms, which they view as oppressive. They promote investing in community resources instead of relying on policing and call for the release of all incarcerated individuals.

DSA members have publicly criticized police for years, using derogatory terms and references to historical events to emphasize their view of law enforcement as a force that harms disadvantaged communities. Their frustration is evident, especially after incidents that have drawn attention to police violence.

Mamdani has yet to respond to media inquiries regarding his relationship with the DSA or his views on policing. It remains unclear if he will align with their more radical demands or attempt to find a middle ground. Some within the DSA have expressed a desire for established expectations from him, while others worry about how their more extreme positions might influence his governance.

The new mayor-elect has signaled intentions to avoid some radical measures proposed by the DSA, indicating he does not support eliminating punitive approaches to petty crime. He aims to establish a new “$1.1 billion Community Safety Authority” that would involve social workers and other professionals instead of just police in certain emergency situations.

Concerns have arisen regarding the diminishing number of officers in the NYPD, with some experts warning that Mamdani’s plans may lead to further decline in law enforcement resources. Critics are especially apprehensive about how he will manage the impending closure of Rikers, scheduled for August 2027, with the necessary infrastructure likely not prepared in time.

Mamdani has previously emphasized his intention to collaborate with police, offering apologies to NYPD officers for earlier comments that may have damaged relations. He acknowledges the risks that officers take daily and has promised to advocate on their behalf.

Yet, skepticism remains around whether his far-left vision can effectively engage with or support police work. Many doubt his commitments will lead to tangible improvements for the city and its law enforcement efforts.
