Mamdani's housing plan faces backlash close to the Intrepid Museum

The large homeless encampment that spreads across roughly 12 blocks along Manhattan’s West Side is raising concerns among residents and visitors alike. Many believe the city isn’t taking sufficient action to address the issues related to the tents, litter, and alleged illegal activities. One local, who prefers to remain anonymous, expressed, “I think it’s embarrassing.” A nearby construction security guard, known as “Dog Man Joe,” echoed these sentiments, claiming, “I don’t think enough is being done.”

When Mamdani assumed office, he initially honored an early promise by halting encampment cleanups but later modified the policy to allow homeless teams a week to operate before clearing out. Joe commented, “They have to clean them… the last seven days, or whatever it is now, is really not working.” Recently, city outreach workers visited the encampment, mainly focusing on trash removal, while numerous tents remained.

Joe pointed out that he believes the police should have more authority to enforce regulations. “We need to enforce and give police the right to do their jobs,” he said. Complaints about blocked sidewalks and illegal acts have been reported, leading Joe to describe the situation as “terrible,” referencing issues like drugs and prostitution.

The encampment has drawn significant attention due to its location near the Intrepid Museum, prompting worries about its consequences for tourism. A visitor from Belgium, Karen, expressed her disappointment in the government’s lack of support for people experiencing homelessness, stating, “I don’t know how it works here in America, but just as politicians promise to help people, they should help everyone.” This reflects a broader frustration among locals.

According to reports, some individuals at the encampment appeared to be tapping into power from nearby utility poles. While the NYPD has yet to approve any cleanup, a spokesperson indicated preparedness to proceed. Complaints about illicit activities in the area have also surfaced, although these claims remain unverified.

As the encampment continues to impact the surroundings, concerns linger about how this situation will unfold. Mamdani previously stated intentions to eventually clear it out, but a specific timeline hasn’t been provided. There’s a clear sense of unease, with locals feeling that changes are necessary for the community and its visitors to thrive.
