Recent reports indicate that a 21-year-old has been accused of serving alcohol to Pittsburgh Pirates fans who collapsed on the field last month.
This involved Kaban Markwood, a 20-year-old former college football player, who was reportedly identified as a man that fell over 20 feet onto the warning track in right field.
Ethan Kirkwood now faces charges for providing alcohol to a minor.
The complaint highlights surveillance footage showing Kirkwood several times providing alcohol to Markwood. Kirkwood allegedly granted the purchase, according to reports.
Pittsburgh police haven’t immediately responded to inquiries regarding the situation.
During the seventh inning of a game against the Chicago Cubs, Markwood fell after flipping multiple times in the air. He has since suffered a broken neck but claims to be “okay,” even while acknowledging a challenging recovery process.
Markwood described his injuries as extensive, mentioning severe back pain and swollen hands. He suggested that he would apply ice when he gets home, reflecting a somewhat casual approach to managing his injuries.
After the fall, Markwood was rushed to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was in critical condition at one point.
The incident raised concerns among Pittsburgh Public Safety officials, especially given that fans near Markwood reportedly celebrated the Pirates’ rally by pouring beer over themselves just before the fall.
Markwood had previously played for two Division II football programs, Walsh University and Wheeling University, appearing in four games with the latter in 2023.
