Zoo Animals to Become Traveling Ambassadors

Recently, a group of animals from the Maryland Zoo received special care and treatment as they prepared for their roles as traveling ambassadors. Their mission? To visit various locations and showcase their natural behaviors to the public.

Exotic Animal Smuggling Incident

An Israeli man arriving in Tel Aviv from Thailand was apprehended with 186 exotic animals hidden in his suitcase. The individual, who’s in his 20s and hails from Bnei Brak, caught the attention of customs inspectors at Ben Gurion Airport, as reported by Israeli news agency TPS-IL.

The smuggled assortment included snakes, turtles, crabs, frogs, lizards, and various amphibians.

During customs inspection, he allegedly chose the green lane instead of the designated red lane, where one must declare such items. The estimated value of the confiscated animals is tens of thousands of dollars, according to authorities from the Israeli Tax Authority and other relevant departments.

Transportation Conditions

All the animals were found alive but unfortunately unfed and plagued by harsh transportation conditions in extreme heat.

Authorities are considering serious charges against the suspect for animal cruelty and violating welfare laws.

“Various species can become invasive and endanger local wildlife and agriculture,” officials noted, emphasizing the broader implications of such smuggling activities. They added that smuggled animals often arrive without the necessary veterinary checks, which can lead to dangerous parasites and diseases that contribute to high mortality rates shortly after arrival.

Travel Guidelines

For those interested in bringing pets, Ben Gurion Airport allows travel with dogs, cats, and exotic birds, but larger animals may need to be checked. Passengers are advised to pick up their animals in the arrival area.

Previous Smuggling Incidents

This isn’t an isolated case; similar incidents have happened before at the same airport. In July, customs officials uncovered nearly 140 exotic reptiles and arachnids, including iguanas and pythons, during another smuggling attempt. Regrettably, one of the snakes didn’t survive the journey.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority has reiterated that smuggling wild animals into the country infringes upon various laws and poses substantial risks.

Authorities are currently working to return the seized animals to their place of origin, as such incidents appear to occur with some regularity. It’s a curious and somewhat concerning reminder of the lengths some will go to for rare wildlife, but it also underscores the ongoing challenges of wildlife protection and regulation.
