A man in Florida is facing a serious situation after he allegedly began threatening and assaulting a homeowner at a mobile home park in Fort Pierce earlier this week. The altercation escalated, but it ended when the victim brandished a gun and fired a single shot, according to police.
This incident took place at the Seminole Mobile Home Park around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, as reported by local media.
St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard R. Del Toro shared with WFLX-TV that the victim “shot the suspect squarely in the chest.”
Del Toro indicated that the two men had prior knowledge of each other and had been embroiled in arguments, which involved not only verbal disputes but also threatening text messages.
Investigators stated that the 37-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed yet, made several threats before arriving at the victim’s home, which is inhabited by a 22-year-old man.
According to reports, the suspect knocked on the door and was permitted entry, leading to a physical confrontation.
During the scuffle, the suspect allegedly pushed the homeowner and delivered multiple punches to his stomach, as detailed by WPEC.
Upon being assaulted, the victim drew his handgun and fired once, which effectively stopped the threat, Del Toro explained during the coverage.
The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, but sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival, according to reports.
The deceased man’s girlfriend expressed her sorrow, saying, “It’s not fair. He doesn’t have a father anymore. He’s five years old, what should I say to him? I couldn’t even say goodbye.”
Del Toro mentioned that the homeowner remained at the scene and was cooperative with the police. Both the homeowner’s girlfriend and sister were present and gave corroborating accounts of the incident.
Investigators later recovered a handgun from the residence after executing a search warrant.
As for the homeowner, no charges have been filed against him. Authorities are collaborating with the state attorney’s office to ascertain if the shooting falls under Florida’s self-defense law.
Del Toro emphasized, “Obviously you have to protect yourself, but at the same time, any time you’re going to use deadly force, you have to feel like your life is in danger.”
Adding more context, the sheriff noted that the suspect had a criminal background, which included drug-related charges and domestic violence issues. However, he asserted that this history wasn’t a justification for the tragic event.
The suspect’s name will not be disclosed until next of kin have been informed.
The girlfriend of the deceased reflected on her loss, saying, “It’s very heartbreaking. And now I’m a single mom.”
