On Wednesday, Rep. Nancy Mace put forth a resolution in the House aimed at expelling Democrat Rep. Ramonica McQuiver from New Jersey. This came a day after McQuiver faced federal charges for allegedly assaulting law enforcement during a protest at the Federal Immigration Detention Center earlier this month.
Mace stated, “On May 9th, McQuiver not only broke the law, but attacked people who defended it.” She emphasized in her press release that attacking agents from Homeland Security and ICE isn’t just dishonorable; it’s outright assault. “If regular Americans did what she did, they would be handcuffed,” Mace added.
The Justice Department released a federal complaint against McQuiver, accusing him of “attacking, obstructing, and interfering with law enforcement” during the incident at a Newark immigration facility called Delaney Hall. Reports indicated that McQuiver was with two other council members, and they were said to have counseling duties. Interestingly, the Mayor of New Jersey, Las Baraka, was also involved but ended up being arrested after the event, although the charges against him were later dropped.
Mace’s resolution references historical precedents in the House for expelling members who have been charged with significant criminal offenses, according to her press release.
