Chicago Man Avoids Jail Time After Train Attack

A man accused of a brutal attack on a fellow passenger aboard a Chicago train has avoided prison time, according to local reports.

Jesus Ramirez, 45, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery. Reports indicate that he punched a passenger on a CTA Pink Line train back in April. Initially sentenced to two years, he received credit for over a year of electronic monitoring, which under Illinois law cut his term in half, meaning no additional prison time.

Details about the April incident reveal that Ramirez approached the victim and struck him in the face, continuing to punch and kick him as he lay on the ground. Surveillance footage captured the attack, which escalated from a verbal exchange between the two men who did not know each other.

The victim, aged 37, sustained severe injuries, leading to a week-long coma and a hospital stay of around two months, suffering from multiple injuries including cerebral hemorrhage and fractures.

During a court appearance, Judge Anker Srivastava noted the seriousness of the crime, stating that Ramirez “almost won” with the severity of the attack against the victim.

While Ramirez was initially booked into Cook County Jail, he was released three months later, now with an ankle monitor instead of serving time in prison.
