Man charged with shooting his wife during a dispute and then making a poor decision while driving her to the hospital.

Last month, police responded to a shooting incident in the 3000 block of Fostoria Road, located in southwestern Memphis, after receiving a call about the event. According to a lawsuit affidavit, when officers arrived on July 19, they forced entry into the house, only to find it empty.

However, investigators later discovered the shooting victims at a nearby hospital. Statements indicated that the wife of the accused, DiCarlo Pitchford, explained the situation to the officers. She reported that during an argument, Pitchford pointed a black handgun at her and shot her in the abdomen. Despite his claims that it was an accident, she insisted that the shooting was intentional.

During this incident, Pitchford reportedly said to her, “I told you to stop playing with me.” Pitchford, aged 51, acknowledged to the police that he was carrying a firearm, despite having a felony record. He stated that he was attempting to clear a jam in the gun when it accidentally discharged.

After wounding his wife, Pitchford took her to the hospital but made a stop for beer along the way. It’s unclear where exactly he stopped or how long this detour took.

Pitford now faces multiple charges, including attempted second-degree murder, possession of a firearm, and domestic assault. The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office noted last week that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with the case against him.

Currently, Pitchford is being held on a bond set at $350,000. As of Monday morning, he remained in custody, and there was no scheduled court date available at that time. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office did not provide any immediate responses regarding additional details in Pitchford’s jail records.
