Man convicted of rape faces attempted murder charges after mother in NYC left in coma

Parolee Arrested for Alleged Violent Attack on NYC Woman

A man who was on parole after serving over ten years in prison for rape has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a New York woman. The suspect, Miguel Girou, aged 30, faces charges of attempted murder following an alleged attack on 44-year-old Diana Agudelo, a single mother of two. Agudelo was riding her electric bike on Randall’s Island when the incident occurred.

The attack reportedly happened around 11:30 PM on May 16th, during which Girou is accused of beating Agudelo, taking her bike, and leaving her injured. Reports indicate that she suffered a fractured skull and facial injuries, and was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where her condition remains critical; she has been in a coma since being found.

Agudelo, who had been biking to save up for her children’s college education, was attacked as she was commuting. After his arraignment, Girou denied involvement in the assault while being escorted to a police vehicle. He stated, “I found her,” claiming that he waited for help and even reported, “They didn’t say that.” His demeanor suggested a mix of defiance and confusion about the allegations against him.

The police have not responded to requests for further comment. As this distressing situation unfolds, it raises questions about the safety of those trying to make an honest living and the consequences faced by those re-entering society after serious convictions.
