Chicken Drama Over Dinner Plans

A recent social media post highlights a domestic spat when a man’s dinner plans went awry after his wife shrugged off his tanned chicken dish. It all unfolded on July 26 in a Reddit thread from the “Am I The A – Hole” forum, where the wife mentioned it started when she decided to try out a new recipe.

“It’s from Orzo’s one-pot chicken,” he noted. She had ordered the groceries earlier that day and picked them up around 11 a.m.

But come 5:30 p.m., she couldn’t find the chickens, discovering they had been left in the trunk all afternoon. “It wasn’t frozen chicken,” he explained. “It was fresh raw chicken in a sealed bag.”

Surprisingly, it wasn’t a particularly warm day—around 60 degrees Fahrenheit—but the car had been sitting in the sun. While his wife insisted the chicken felt “cool to touch,” he wavered. It wasn’t warm, sure, but he wasn’t so sure about calling it “overly cold.”

“I guess it hovered between refrigerator and room temperature,” he concluded. However, this realization led him to quickly inform her he wasn’t keen on eating the chicken.

“She told me, ‘I’m going to eat the chicken,’” he recalled. This apparent determination from her side only escalated their back-and-forth discussions.

Despite the disagreements, she pressed on with the meal prep. It wasn’t until he suggested she make something simpler that their tensions reached a turning point. “She wanted to make this meal for me, but she seemed less than thrilled about it,” he admitted.

Eventually, he stated, “I’m not going to eat it,” feeling as if he was being forced into having chicken for dinner. This prompted her to jump back into the car, looking for a fresh supply from the store.

As he reflected on it, he felt a twinge of regret about how they might have wasted a perfectly good chicken. Most of the Redditors echoed this sentiment in nearly 2,000 comments, warning about the dangers of food poisoning instead of chucking the meat from the trunk.

One of the top replies candidly remarked, “You know what’s worse than tossing chicken? Food poisoning. I guess he didn’t eat that chicken either.” Another chimed in, “I pass on that chicken because I take food safety pretty seriously.”

Interestingly, a commenter who claimed to have two decades of restaurant experience offered a different angle, suggesting, “I would have cooked it. If it’s still cool to touch, it should be fine.”

However, Dr. Brian Quackle, a food scientist from California, warned about the situation’s dire risks. “Having that chicken in the car for hours definitely raises concerns,” he stated. Bacteria can multiply rapidly as the temperature rises. “It’s not safe to eat,” he emphasized.

Despite hypothetical cooking attempts to eradicate any bacteria, he noted that wouldn’t address all safety aspects, particularly potential toxins that can form and remain heat-resistant.
