American mother recounts terrifying experience in French wildfires
Rebecca Papin, an American mother, shared her harrowing tale of being stuck with her young children amidst the fierce wildfires raging in southwest France. The situation has led to the evacuation of over 220,000 people. Papin recounted the suddenness of the fire’s emergence and discussed her family’s struggle to secure basic necessities during the ordeal.
In a separate incident, a French man discovered what seemed to be five newborn babies concealed in a cardboard box at his home following an argument with his partner, who had recently given birth at home before being taken to the hospital, according to prosecutors.
Despite her persistent denials, the man found out about her pregnancy quite late and, after becoming anxious, searched their home. The couple already had two children, aged 8 and 9. The 32-year-old woman, whose name hasn’t been disclosed, had an argument with her husband over the contents of the box on the day after she gave birth to a son at home.
During the dispute, she began experiencing abdominal pain and was taken to the hospital, while her husband stayed home. That’s when he found the corpse of a baby hidden in the box.
After the woman was taken to the hospital, her husband informed the authorities about his discovery. A source close to the investigation indicated that when he looked into the box—where they had fought—he found five deceased infants. The remains had apparently been there for some time.
Law enforcement searched the couple’s residence, and prosecutors launched a murder investigation. Initial examinations by a forensic pathologist suggested that the remains belonged to five newborns, including bones of four and the decomposed remains of a fifth. An autopsy and additional tests were subsequently ordered.
The man asserted to police that he was unaware of his wife’s possible pregnancy. Meanwhile, child welfare services have been contacted to assess the well-being of the couple’s older children, and an interim protection order was put in place for the newborn pending a referral to a Children’s Court judge.
As of Tuesday, the mother remained hospitalized and had yet to communicate with investigators.
Prosecutors also mandated a post-mortem examination of the decomposed bodies, and a laboratory analysis of the bones is anticipated. Reports have indicated that the couple had no previous issues and were viewed as “nice people” by their neighbors.
One neighbor described the woman as a homemaker while the husband was employed, adding that they were “just really ordinary folks.”
