A man from Texas faces charges for allegedly buying and transporting explosives with plans to attack police during anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests in Los Angeles.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) reports that Grzegorz Vandenberg bought fireworks at a travel center in New Mexico, claiming to have special forces military experience and the ability to build pipe bombs.
Charging documents indicate that “Vandenberg informed the cashier that he would be traveling to Los Angeles, California for the riots to kill law enforcement officers or government officials.”
He also reportedly asked the clerk which fireworks had the most explosive content and suggested they join him and his “platoon” in California.
The complaint detailed, “Vandenberg purchased six mortars that hold 60 grams of gunpowder each, and 36 large fireworks.”
Following Vandenberg’s remarks, a store employee noted his license plate and contacted law enforcement.
According to documents, he was arrested last Friday in Tucson, Arizona.
U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico, Ryan Ellison, commented, “Targeting law enforcement with violence is not protest – it’s a crime. Anyone who attempts to harm officers or undermine public safety will be held accountable.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining safety and the integrity of lawful demonstrations, clarifying that those who resort to violence would face prompt prosecution.
