A man has been found guilty of breaking into Eminem’s Detroit home not once, but twice, raising serious concerns about security.
Matthew David Hughes, 32, was convicted in McComb County, Michigan, on May 7. Sentencing is set for June 17.
The case stems from an incident in August 2024, when Hughes unlawfully entered the rapper’s residence in Clinton Township, a suburb near Detroit.
Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, was at home during the break-in but did not confront Hughes. He attended court for the conviction as well, as reported.
Prosecutor Stephen Fox remarked during the proceedings that the pursuit of fame often leads people to questionable actions. “Fame can put you in the bubble,” he said, emphasizing the burden of celebrity.
Hughes had previously attempted a break-in at Eminem’s home in 2020, using bricks to gain entry. He and Eminem came face-to-face during that incident, and Hughes reportedly made threats against the rapper’s life.
Testimony from that trial revealed that when confronted by Eminem, Hughes expressed intentions that were alarming, saying he was there to kill him.
Hughes was eventually charged for both break-ins and received a plea deal that resulted in five years of probation, after which he was released on parole in May 2024.
Fox noted the extensive measures Eminem has taken for protection, stating that the artist lives in a heightened state of fear due to stalkers like Hughes.
In a related incident this week, actress Jennifer Aniston faced her own safety scare when a man crashed his car through the gates of her Bel Air mansion. Aniston was home, and the intruder was apprehended and charged with felony vandalism, appearing in court later for a mental evaluation.
