Man in Arizona fires 10 shots at apartment after neighbors turn down cocaine deal, according to police

A man from Scottsdale went on a violent spree, shooting at an apartment building after his neighbors declined his offer of cocaine.

Samuel Ellery Sedgwick, 49, was taken into custody after reports indicated he fired ten shots at a residential complex near Miller and Osborn roads early on Thursday.

It seems Sedgwick was in a disturbed state when he offered cocaine to the residents. When they refused, he reportedly claimed their rejection was “offensive to his culture” and began assaulting one man.

Another person, fearing for the assaulted man’s life, intervened with a claw hammer, striking Sedgwick in the face twice. In response, Sedgwick brandished a gun, threatened everyone nearby, and proceeded to pistol-whip the man before making his exit.

Returning to his apartment, he was enraged upon seeing his chipped tooth in the mirror.

Afterward, Sedgwick rode his bicycle back to the apartment complex and fired ten rounds, with one bullet penetrating a parking area and hitting a neighboring unit. Another round struck an apartment window, damaging the ceiling.

Police officers, including patrol units, bike officers, and detectives, quickly apprehended Sedgwick, according to Officer Aaron Bolin.

Following his arrest, he was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into the Maricopa County jail. One of the victims was also hospitalized.

The precise relationships between Sedgwick and the victims remain unclear, although they seemed to know each other. A gun was found in a dumpster, along with ammunition and a bag containing a white powdery substance in his home.

Previously, Sedgwick had been arrested in 2020 for domestic violence and endangerment, and was charged with aggravated assault and threatening or intimidating others with property damage.

He is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on October 26.
