Man in bodycam video drives lawn mower to allegedly flee deputy; shoots himself in hand

Newly released police body camera footage shows a Michigan man driving a riding mower, refusing to call for deputies, and then being taped and accidentally shot in the hand, authorities said. It shows what happened.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, on September 19, police responded to a residence in Leoni Township and arrested a man who had multiple warrants.

Sheriff's deputies arrived at a home to arrest James Mitchell Carr, 41, who was operating a riding lawnmower and allegedly refused to get out of the riding lawnmower.

Authorities said Carr accelerated toward the deputy and then rode away as the deputy gave chase.

The mower eventually came to rest in a ditch, but Carr allegedly refused to comply with the deputy's commands despite threats of taping.

Police said Carr continued to ignore the deputy's commands, returned to the lawn mower and pulled out a handgun hidden in the mower and pointed it at the deputy.

“This incident highlights how quickly seemingly routine encounters can escalate and the potential dangers that officers face on a daily basis,” the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. “Fortunately, the deputy was unharmed and the suspect was not seriously injured.”

After being cleared of the charges, Carr was arrested and released on bail.

Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette also asked Michigan State Police to conduct an independent criminal investigation while the sheriff's office conducts an internal investigation. An internal investigation found that no policy violations occurred during the altercation.

Carr was indicted in October and was scheduled to go on trial in Circuit Court last week. He remains in the Jackson County Jail.
