Man in D.C. faces felony assault charges for reportedly throwing a sandwich at a federal agent

A man is facing a federal attack charge after allegedly throwing a subway sandwich at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent during a confrontation in Washington, D.C., on Sunday night.

According to Metro Transit police, they were patrolling the U Street area when Shawn Charles Dan confronted a CBP agent, shouting indecencies and labeling him a “fascist.” He claimed he was part of an initiative by the Trump administration aimed at reducing crime in the capital.

Shortly after, Dan reportedly returned and “strongly tossed” a sandwich at the agent, hitting him in the chest, as noted in court documents. Dan then fled the scene, prompting a chase by federal officials.

Witnesses captured a video on Instagram, where laughter could be heard as Dan fell during his pursuit by the police.

After his arrest and transport to the police station, Dan allegedly stated to another officer, “I did that. I threw a sandwich.”

He now faces a felony charge for attacking a law enforcement officer.

The U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, Johnny Piro, addressed the incident on social media, delivering a firm warning to anyone contemplating assaulting law enforcement. “He doesn’t find it funny today,” Piro remarked, emphasizing that Dan is being charged with a felony offense, demonstrating a commitment to supporting police efforts.

This incident coincides with President Trump’s recent directives for an intensified federal law enforcement presence in D.C., amid efforts to combat rising crime rates.

On the ground, National Guard personnel have been activated alongside FBI agents and others from federal agencies like the DEA and ATF, as part of this increased enforcement initiative. The subway company did not respond immediately when approached for comments.
