Man in Maryland faces murder charges in wife's cold case after 24 years

Maryland Man Arrested for Wife’s 2002 Murder

A man from Maryland is now in custody after being linked to the cold case murder of his wife, which has remained unsolved for over two decades.

Baltimore County police confirmed that Dwight “DJ” Rust Jr. was arrested on Tuesday, facing charges related to the death of Michelle Rust in 2002. Initially, Rust claimed that Michelle, 24, was last seen at around 9:30 a.m. on July 20, 2002, as she headed out to gather supplies for their 3-year-old son’s birthday celebration.

However, after speaking with witnesses, authorities discovered that Michelle never actually left their Halethorpe home prior to her disappearance.

Later that same day, her stepfather found her 1998 green Dodge Caravan abandoned nearby with the key broken off in the door. But despite the search efforts, Michelle was never located.

Police described her as a “dedicated mother and daughter,” emphasizing that she “didn’t go missing alone.” Investigators concluded she had been the victim of foul play.

This case lingered without resolution for 24 years until recent developments led to Rust’s arrest on first-degree murder charges. Authorities have yet to disclose specific details about what prompted this breakthrough.

Rust is currently being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center without bail.

As of now, police responses to further inquiries have not been immediately forthcoming.
