The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in Florida announced on Thursday that a man who was shot and killed outside a restaurant had been the aggressor in the incident.
According to a statement from the Sheriffs’ Office, the shooting occurred early Thursday morning at a Cocoa Beach eatery. Deputies arrived at Graham’s Beach Grill around 2:18 a.m. to find 33-year-old Walter Butler from Rockledge with serious injuries.
“Butler engaged in a verbal dispute with another man regarding a past disagreement,” the Sheriff’s Office explained. “This disagreement turned into a physical confrontation when Butler attacked the other man, who then fired a single shot.”
Butler managed to enter the restaurant but collapsed shortly thereafter. Emergency personnel from Brevard County provided first aid at the scene, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.
The individual who fired the shot remained at the location and spoke with the responding deputies. Following this, he was taken into custody and brought to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office for further questioning by homicide investigators.
“Based on initial findings, the person who shot Butler has been released and is cooperating with law enforcement,” the Sheriff’s Office reported. “The investigation continues as agents are seeking to interview other witnesses who were around when the shooting occurred.”
In a separate incident on Sunday in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood, a concealed carry permit holder shot one of two assailants who confronted him. The assailant was reported to be in critical condition, as noted by NBC Chicago, which stated that the armed individual fired in response to an attack.
Additionally, in Mesquite, Texas, police stated that residents were disturbed by sounds inside their home around 4 a.m. on Saturday. Upon investigation, a resident armed himself and confronted an intruder, firing a shot that injured the suspect, who now faces burglary charges.
