Blindfolded Dart Travel Adventure
Sorin Mihailovici, a 48-year-old entrepreneur, is on a thrilling journey that began in 2012. His unique method involves throwing darts at a world map while blindfolded and then visiting the countries where the darts land. It’s, well, an unpredictable way to travel, for sure.
At first, Mihailovici explored distant places like the Arctic, Russia, and Indonesia. Initially, he made these trips once a year, but now he’s upped it to about 16 destinations annually. Surprisingly, he funded these adventures from his own savings before forming partnerships with various companies.
Exploring Unfamiliar Places
Interestingly, Mihailovici doesn’t always go directly to where the darts land; he often starts in the capital city of the country. He noted that in some smaller countries, like Uruguay, hitting the exact target would be challenging. His favorite places so far? Iceland, Argentina, and Thailand really stand out, but he considers Madagascar his top pick.
Mihailovici raves about the street food in Vietnam, declaring it “the best” he’s ever tasted and mentions that it was also one of the most affordable destinations. In contrast, he highlighted that places like Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Maldives can be quite pricey.
His travel show, “Travel by Dart,” features clips from his trips. During the pandemic, he spent time editing his footage and ended up creating a season of 13 episodes. “It was a great way to utilize the downtime,” he recalled. He hired local videographers to help produce content for YouTube and Amazon Prime.
Traveling to Unexpected Destinations
Despite the unpredictable nature of his dart-based travel method, Mihailovici doesn’t shy away from risky locations. He shared an experience in Iraq, where many cautioned him against going due to safety concerns. Yet, he ended up visiting Babylon. Admittedly, he felt a little apprehensive about the political climate but decided to embrace wherever his dart led him.
The goal? To visit every country in the world through dart throwing. “I’ve hit all the major spots on the map,” he explained, although he added that hitting smaller locations is harder—especially since he’s blindfolded while throwing.
Mihailovici dreams of exploring Australia and Spain next, admitting that August might be a tougher time for hitting those targets accurately.
Throughout his adventures, he’s been to a remarkable range of places including Easter Island, Cuba, Brazil, Japan, and even Antarctica. Hotels often complement the charms he features on his show, making each visit special in its own way.
