Man killed by police after hours-long manhunt for shooting ex-girlfriend in Hawaii

A man shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in Hawaii on Monday morning, ran from police for several hours before dying in a police shootout.

Sidney Tafokitau's crime spree began on the Moanalua Expressway, where he chased his 39-year-old ex-girlfriend while driving in a white car with no license plates, he told police. island news.

He then shot her multiple times while she was inside the car, causing her to crash into a highway barrier.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services found the woman with multiple injuries and transported her to the hospital in critical condition, Island News reported.

Several hours later, Tafokitau was spotted by plainclothes police officers in Kalihi and fired at the officer's unmarked car near a high school.

He evaded arrest and fled to Likelike Highway where he stole a vehicle at gunpoint. Many people reported seeing the vehicle in Kahuku and the North Shore.

Police located the man in Kapahulu around 3:30 p.m., and the shootout began near the University of Hawaii's main campus.

Mr Tafokitau was killed in the shootout and two plainclothes police officers were also injured.

Police said a fourth man was injured when a police vehicle hit him and they are investigating whether he was involved.

Tafokitau was also wanted by police for shooting a group of men on Rose Street in Kalihi on Dec. 16. According to Honolulu Police.

He got into an altercation with the group and then opened fire on them, hitting one person and using a knife to wound another.
