Several immigrants had to jump from a second-story window after being held by a trafficker for ransom for days without food, authorities reported.
Cameron Tucker, 25, is accused of smuggling Mexican immigrants into Houston after illegally crossing the border at Eagle Pass, having hidden them in the floorboards of his vehicle.
It’s claimed that Tucker kept these individuals in his home in a typically family-friendly area of Houston. A victim managed to alert authorities, who were responding to another incident nearby.
A few days later, the alleged felon reportedly threatened the victim with a gun in his home and demanded $2,000 from a Mexican family.
The victim managed to escape by moving a mattress that was blocking the bedroom door.
He was able to inform local police, who found Tucker hiding inside the residence after breaking down the door.
A neighbor, speaking anonymously, recounted, “I heard the helicopter and the dog was barking. They were here at about 4:45 am and didn’t leave until 6 pm.”
Tucker is said to have traveled partway to the border to gather the victims. A woman dropped the victim off at the Mexican side before Tucker illegally picked him up on the U.S. side.
The victim told investigators that he had been at a house in Eagle Pass for three nights prior to Tucker’s arrival.
Residents in the Houston neighborhood where the incident occurred expressed disbelief upon learning of it.
“It makes you think a lot because we’re not too far away, and I didn’t know it was happening,” remarked one neighbor.
Another neighbor noted that they observed unusual comings and goings at the house during the late-night hours.
“Around 12 am, 2 am, 2:30 am, that’s when they came out,” the neighbor added.
Tucker is facing escalating legal troubles in connection with this case.
