Berlin Pride Attack Investigation

Authorities announced that the suspect involved in the recent attack at the Berlin Pride festival was linked to “Islamist circles.” The suspect, identified as Abdul B., a 21-year-old of Lebanese-German descent, was shot by a Special Forces officer in Berlin after allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers with a knife.

Abdul B. is believed to have driven a vehicle into the crowd during the festival and subsequently attacked attendees with a knife. The incident resulted in one fatality and 29 injuries, sparking shock among the festival-goers, who expected a peaceful celebration.

This particular Pride celebration is notable for being the largest of its kind in Europe, drawing hundreds of thousands of participants at the Bundestag site. German authorities have characterized the suspect as “radicalized” and involved in Islamist activities. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that current evidence points to the incident being an Islamist attack.

Dobrindt also revealed that Abdul B. had a prior criminal record, having served a 10-month sentence in Berlin, although details regarding his offenses remain unclear. Following the identification of the suspect, investigations commenced immediately.

On Sunday evening, Abdul B. was located at a community garden in the western part of Berlin.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the attack, labeling it a “heinous act” that has prompted a nationwide discussion about security and radicalization.
