Tragic Fall at the Grand Canyon
A 65-year-old man fell over 100 feet to his death in the Grand Canyon this week. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office reported that this accident happened at Guano Point in Grand Canyon West.
Authorities say the man slipped and fell around 2 p.m. Thursday. The search and rescue team was called in to assist the Hualapai Tribe with the recovery of the body. Rescue crews found him about 130 feet below the rim, on a pile of debris. They set up a lift system using ropes to recover his body and transport it to the coroner’s office.
The victim’s name has not been released yet. Images from the rescue show responders lowering baskets into the ravine to help retrieve him.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the Hualapai Tribal Police and fire departments in this difficult situation. They also extended condolences to the man’s family, asking for privacy during this tough time.
This incident follows another tragic event in which a Colorado man died in September after his car fell hundreds of feet from the edge of the Grand Canyon National Park. Rangers recovered his body about 300 feet below the rim after the vehicle went over the edge near the South Kaibab Trailhead. The deceased was identified as 27-year-old Steven “Drew” Bradley from Federal Heights, Colorado.
As recovery efforts continue, the dangers of the Grand Canyon are once again in the spotlight, bringing attention to the importance of safety at these dramatic landscapes.
