Man mocks campus Turning Point USA table, claims Kirk was shot 'for a reason'

Incident at University of New Mexico Involving Turning Point USA Sign

Police at the University of New Mexico (UNM) apprehended a man believed to have attempted to steal a sign from a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event. This occurred while the campus table event was taking place, during which a controversial comment was made about Charlie Kirk, a murdered conservative activist, stating, “Kirk was shot in the neck for some reason.”

A post from Frontlines TPUSA on X, previously known as Twitter, showcased video footage of the altercation, stating, “Attention: ‘Kirk was shot in the neck for a reason.’” A student, identified as the suspect, reportedly resisted arrest before being taken into custody.

Footage from the scene depicts a masked individual engaged in a heated debate with attendees at the TPUSA table, particularly regarding buttons that criticized socialism. At one point, the individual made a rather provocative assertion, saying, “You’re bullshit by Kirk. There’s a reason why Kirk was shot in the neck.”

The response from a female attendee was immediate: “Wow, that’s not cool at all. Charlie was a father and a husband.”

The masked man retorted, asserting that many socialists incite violence, claiming Kirk was among them before seizing the sign. However, the video was edited, leaving the details of the incident leading up to the arrest unclear.

Ben Cloutier, the executive director of strategic communications at UNM, expressed the university’s dedication to free speech, emphasizing its role as a platform for debate and diverse viewpoints. Cloutier reassured that the institution aims to protect constitutionally guaranteed speech while maintaining a safe environment for all students.

A memorial service for Kirk took place on September 13. Kirk, aged 31 and co-founder of TPUSA, was tragically shot during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10.

Following Kirk’s death, there has been a notable increase in requests for new TPUSA chapters across the nation, with reports indicating that over 120,000 students have inquired about starting initiatives at their respective schools in the aftermath of the incident.
