Incident Involving Stolen Car with Child in Chicago

A 27-year-old man in Chicago is accused of stealing a car while a boy was still in the back seat, then fleeing the scene soon after the child’s father exited the vehicle.

This troubling event was reported to have occurred last Friday night around 9:20 p.m. in the 800 block of North Milwaukee Avenue.

According to reports, a 34-year-old man left his 12-year-old son in a 2014 Hyundai Elantra and walked away. Not long afterward, the suspect, identified as Jordan Miller from East Chicago, Indiana, got into the driver’s seat and sped off southbound, leaving the boy behind.

The details remain unclear—it’s uncertain if the father left the car unlocked or if the keys were inside.

The child in the back seat asked Miller about his father, but the suspect allegedly shoved him back into his seat and threw the child’s cell phone out of the car, as per police accounts.

Prosecutors noted that Miller exited the vehicle without putting it in park, causing the car to roll out of control with the boy still inside.

The vehicle eventually crashed into another car in the 900 block of West Frye Street, which is only about half a mile from the theft location. Paramedics transported the 12-year-old to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he was treated for pain in multiple areas.

Officers managed to locate Miller in the 1000 block of West Chicago Street. He matched the description given by the boy and a witness at the scene.

Miller was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center due to a cut on his left hand and was later released. He faces serious charges, including robbery and aggravated kidnapping of a minor under 13, as well as possession of a stolen vehicle.

Records from Cook County Jail reveal that Miller was detained without bail and has a hearing set for March 13. During a detention hearing, Judge Anthony Calabrese decided to hold Miller until the next proceedings.
