Man stabbed Massachusetts girlfriend 10 times in face, neck before leaving body at airport, prosecutors say

Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangete, 40, was wanted for the murder of his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu, whose body was found inside an SUV at Boston Logan International Airport on October 31, 2023.

In Suffolk Superior Court in Boston, Mbitu's family and friends issued a statement following the judge's sentence.

“It's been a long journey and today gives us hope and marks a step towards justice,” said cousin Mary Kinyarilo, who shared the family's statement. “We will continue to fight until this coward is jailed and never sees the light of day again or until he can hurt other families and take away their loved ones.”

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said this is “just the beginning of a long road to justice” for Mbitu and her family.

“She was deeply loved. She was a caregiver, a nurse who was beloved by all of her patients, a beautiful soul, a wonderful daughter and a loving sister,” Hayden said.

Prosecutors on Tuesday revealed new details about Mbitu's death, saying Kangete “brutally attacked” her with a knife in his car.

The attack left her with 10 wounds on her face and neck, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors previously said Mbitu was found in her car parked at Logan International Airport after her brutal murder, face down with the seat reclined and the windows dark-tinted to obscure the view inside the car.

Kangete had allegedly abandoned his car and was on his way back to his home country when authorities discovered the young nurse's body.

Following the investigation into Mbitu's death, US and Kenyan law enforcement agencies launched a manhunt for Kangete, who was first spotted and arrested at a Nairobi nightclub on January 29.

On February 8, he fled the police station and jumped into his personal minivan.

He was later located again and arrested, and remained in Kenya until his extradition to the United States last week.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on Nov. 5 for a pretrial hearing.
