“He suffered multiple skull fractures and bleeding from the brain,” shared Kristen Phillips, a mother of three currently hospitalized due to severe brain injuries. Police reported she was attacked and beaten with a baseball bat while delivering food for DoorDash.
The assailant, identified as 44-year-old Stanley Shockley, is now in custody.
According to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, this incident happened in broad daylight. Phillips was cornered by Shockley, who struck her as she stepped out of her vehicle to complete a delivery.
The situation escalated on August 1 in Jacksonville, North Carolina, as Phillips stopped at an intersection, waiting for the driver ahead to move. Shockley, it seems, was behind the wheel and reacted when she honked her horn, prompting what became a frightening confrontation.
The sheriff’s office noted that Shockley’s vehicle moved aside but then began to pursue Phillips. After she completed her delivery and was heading back to her car, he jumped out and attacked her with the bat before fleeing the scene.
In her own words, Phillips recalled, “He came to my door with a small wooden baseball bat or nightstick and hit me in the head and face with it.” She was unsure about specific details, saying, “I don’t remember anything at all. I woke up too late to be sure.” Following the attack, she managed to drive herself to a nearby hospital.
Medical evaluations revealed she had multiple skull fractures, brain bleeding, and fluid drainage from her left ear. Additionally, she sustained a fractured cheekbone. Phillips described her ordeal, saying, “There were multiple skull fractures and bleeding from the brain, and blood and brain fluid drained from my left ear for hours.” She underwent several surgeries due to her injuries.
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Shockley’s arrest on Monday in connection with the assault. He faces serious charges, including assault with a deadly weapon that resulted in severe bodily harm with intent to kill.
In response to the incident, Sheriff Chris Thomas expressed gratitude for the public’s involvement, stating that the investigation was difficult but the detectives were dedicated, pursuing all leads diligently. The community’s assistance played a key role in identifying the suspect and making the arrest.
