Man taken into custody for making death threats against conservative podcaster Benny Johnson as authorities address violent political speech

Man Arrested for Threatening Conservative Commentator

On Friday, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the arrest of a man who allegedly threatened to kill conservative commentator Benny Johnson. Authorities indicated this incident resembles a troubling copycat scenario, drawing inspiration from the recent assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

At a press conference in Florida, Bondi mentioned that days following Kirk’s assassination, George Isabel Jr. was apprehended after making threats that could leave Johnson’s children “orphans.”

Johnson received a threatening letter at his home, which his wife, Kate, described as intensely hostile towards him for his beliefs. She recounted, “The author of this letter made it clear that she hated Benny for his ideas and that she wanted him dead,” while speaking outside the U.S. Attorney’s office in Tampa.

Following his arrest on Friday morning, Isabel faces charges in federal court for mailing threatening communications. Bondi characterized Isabel as a “left-wing extremist” and noted that he could face a prison sentence if found guilty.

During the press event, Johnson elaborated on the shocking details contained in the letter, highlighting the clear political motivations behind it. He pointed out, “The person who wrote me the letter explained why he wanted me dead. I was a white, cis, Christian Trump supporter. They explained in great detail how I would be killed in the open just like Charlie.” He added, “This man was very happy to tell me how he left my four children orphaned and lost his beautiful wife.”

Bondi emphasized that this arrest should serve as a warning. She stated, “We cannot allow this political violence to continue any longer. This arrest will serve as a warning to many people. Don’t do that. We will find you.” She also mentioned that similar threats are being investigated across the nation and that the Department of Justice is actively addressing such issues.

Bondi made clear that this type of behavior would not go unpunished, asserting, “This guy thought he could get away with this and he thought he could hurt Benny and his family and that’s not going to happen.” She declared her office is looking into other unsolved cases throughout the country.

The context for these arrests occurs as the Trump administration intensifies its stance against political violence, with a renewed focus directed at groups like Antifa. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recently compared the sophistication of such movements to that of terrorist organizations.

In light of Kirk’s death, President Trump designated Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization late last month. Johnson, who was a friend of Kirk’s, expressed a desire to engage in debate akin to what Kirk championed—without the fear of violence. He urged Democrats to denounce political violence.

Kirk was tragically shot and killed on September 10 while engaging students during an “American Comeback” speaking tour at Utah Valley University. Investigators, including Utah Governor Spencer Cox, described the alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson, as someone “deeply indoctrinated with left-wing ideology.”

Johnson concluded with a call for peace, stating, “I want peace in this country. I love this country. I want to raise my family in peace. It’s our birthright. But as Christians, you can’t make peace with evil. You can’t unite with people who want you dead.” He expressed a desire for unity, emphasizing the need to recognize the true battles between good and evil.
