Attack on AI Industry Leader’s Home
San Francisco police have taken a 20-year-old man into custody after he was suspected of throwing a Molotov cocktail at the home of Sam Altman, a prominent figure in the AI industry. Along with this, he allegedly made threats to set fire to OpenAI’s headquarters. Altman tied the incident to a recent critical article about him, stating, “Words have power. A few days ago there was an incendiary article about me.”
The attack occurred around 3:45 a.m. when an incendiary device was thrown onto the property. Security staff managed to put out the fire before firefighters arrived. Luckily, there were no injuries reported.
Shortly after the incident, Altman shared his thoughts in a blog post. He described the attack and reflected on its wider implications. He mentioned, “The first person did it at 3:45 a.m. last night. Thankfully it bounced back home and no one was hurt.”
Altman speculated that the attack might be a response to growing anxieties around artificial intelligence, particularly in light of increasing public critique of his leadership. He acknowledged the harmful effects of incendiary language in media coverage.
“Words have power, too. There was an inflammatory article about me a few days ago,” he remarked. “Yesterday, someone mentioned that AI might be emerging during a time of great anxiety about its implications, potentially making things riskier for me. I didn’t really pay attention.”
He went on to express feelings of anger and concern, wondering if he had underestimated the influence of words and narratives.
In his post, Altman referenced articles by Ronan Farrow and Andrew Marantz that have controversially depicted him as a sociopath, stirring significant reactions within the AI community.
Authorities arrested Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, 20, in connection with the attack. He faces charges including attempted murder, criminal threats, and possession of a destructive device. As of Friday afternoon, formal charges had yet to be filed.
The suspect left the scene before emergency responders arrived, but firefighters found signs of an incendiary device and alerted the police. About an hour later, officers received a report of a man making threats near OpenAI’s headquarters, and they recognized him as a suspect from the earlier incident. No motives for his actions have been disclosed, and Moreno-Gama remains in custody as of Friday afternoon.
In his blog, Altman broadened the conversation to the challenging landscape surrounding AI development. “Fear and anxiety about AI are justified,” he asserted. “We are witnessing the biggest social change in a long time, and perhaps ever.”
In line with the ongoing debate, some, like Wynton Hall, emphasize the need for strategic planning to address the significant alterations AI could bring. They argue that failing to do so might allow figures like Altman to pursue a version of AI that may not represent the broader public interest.
