Suspected Riot Participant Arrested at US-Mexico Border
Elpidio Reina, a man suspected of a violent attack involving throwing rocks at a Mobile Border Patrol vehicle in Los Angeles, was apprehended on Wednesday at the US-Mexico border.
A video reportedly captures Reina, who appears to be wearing a motorcycle helmet, engaging in this attack, which took place on June 7th in Paramount, California, during a protest against ICE in Los Angeles.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayri has shared footage of this incident, which allegedly began at the San Isidro Entry Port in San Diego, resulting in injuries to a federal officer. He characterized the actions of Reina as a “dangerous felony.” Reina surrendered to authorities, facing felony charges for assaulting federal officers.
During his arrest, Reina was found in a vehicle damaged by the attack. Officials noted, rather starkly, that he could have been involved in a reckless and life-threatening situation last month.
Implications and Reactions
Reina is expected to appear in federal court later today. The U.S. Attorney added a clear message: “For those who think they can attack federal officials while obscured by masks and helmets, today’s arrest shows that we will pursue those who violate federal laws.” There’s a strong emphasis on respecting law enforcement here.
FBI Director Kash Patel commented on the incident, underlining that the FBI will not tolerate violence against those protecting the nation. Dan Bongino, a deputy director of the FBI, expressed that individuals like Reina can attempt to evade justice, but ultimately, they won’t escape accountability.
Background on the Protests
The violent confrontations in Los Angeles followed aggressive ICE actions in the area. In response, the Trump administration had deployed about 700 Marines to help quell the chaos, turning additional National Guard troops into the streets. This move drew sharp criticism from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who labeled it as unnecessary and unlawful.
Newsom even filed a lawsuit against the administration, arguing that the deployment violated the Posse Comitatus Act, which limits military involvement in civilian law enforcement.
Legal Proceedings and Future Hearings
A federal judge initially ruled in favor of Governor Newsom’s stance, suggesting that the military’s presence exceeded the authority granted to Trump. However, an appellate court reversed this ruling, allowing military involvement to continue for now. A federal court is set to revisit this issue next month regarding potential violations of the law.
